so SAG-AFTRA finally released some official guidance for fans, viewers, creators/influencers, critics, and more during the strike. here’s what you need to know:
if you see a publication/news source/journalist talking about a piece of struck work, that’s ok. they’re allowed to do that.
2. they’re asking regular viewers and fans to DONATE TO STRIKE FUNDS, SHOW UP TO PICKETS IF YOU CAN, and please do NOT boycott streaming services or movies in theaters.
3. influencers, content creators, cosplayers, and anything in between is still a bit of a grey area, but they’re asking people to use their best judgement. “organically” means UNPAID promo (like an invite to a premiere without being paid, being sent a publicity box, letting the company’s social media post a photo of you in cosplay, etc).
obviously this doesn’t answer every question, and isn’t hard and fast rules for fanworks, but it can at least inform how you personally choose to move forward when posting online and moving publically. i hope this helps!
being against netflix or WB using AI to write scripts or generate deepfaked actors is good. ‘anti ai’ and 'pro ai’ are not two coherent positions–everything must be examined in its context. saying 'our union doesn’t want studios to implement AI writing processes and then credit the AI instead of the human writers who work on it’ is different to silly arguments about how we need new copyright protections because DALL-E is 'stealing your style’
And even if the guilds were more nonsense about being anti-AI, if that is all it takes for you to take the bosses’ side on a dispute between workers and bosses, then you don’t really care much about labor, do you? Being against AI being used in the writing/filming process is a very, very small part of greater demands, one of which is that these actors and writers would like to make enough money to have health insurance. Since one of the demands (one that hurts no marginalized person) is on the wrong side of a weird debate about an emerging technology, should the writers and laborers go without medicine? Or enough money for rent and food, which is often the case for these people? If this weird culture war is what it takes for you to side against workers, then you were just looking for excuses to be against labor.
i think the thing that scares me the most about the fuckin panopticon parenting shit is that its not even optional anymore. like yeah, some parents will be more proactive about invading their kids privacy, watching what sites theyre one, checking their history, scrutinzing their contact with other people, and that sucks
but even if u as a parent realize how fucked that is and dont wanna do that, you just cant give kids the freedom they used to have or youll get CPS called on you, people have had CPS called on them for letting their kid walk a block to the convenience store or walk to a friends house or letting their kids play in their fenced backyard alone

I was allowed to bike around the local woods/park a couple miles away from home with nothing but a walkie-talkie (cell phones were too expensive for kids back then) starting in 4th-5th grade.
This wasn’t ancient history either, this was circa 2005. I demonstrated that I handled freedom responsibly, and my parents were smart enough to know “stranger danger” was fearmongering BS.
Don’t create a prison for your kids based on your speculation about what other people you imagine might hypothetically do.
okay look i dont know how to break this one too you but youre not actually fine even if you arent doing anything wrong. these calls go on record, they create suspicion towards you in your community, and a lot of the times the people sent out will be extra suspicious of just normal shit thats fine on the basis that they got called out
those examples i called out above arent randomly picked, they actually happened, try looking up the instances in question and see the ramifications of this shit
